Several ISER members were part of the Alaska delegation at last month's UArctic Congress in the Faroe Islands. This biennial meeting assembles researchers and institutional leaders from across the Arctic Circle to collaborate on shared goals for the region.
ISER Director and Professor of Education Policy, Diane Hirshberg, attended the 2023 Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavik, Iceland this month. Dr.Hirshberg organized a session, along with Gwen Holdmann of the UAF Alaska Center for Energy & Power (ACEP) on Next Generation Nuclear Power in the Arctic: Possibilities and Concerns.
ISER Diane Hirshberg was lead editor of a book published in January 2023 titled Education, Equity and Inclusion: Teaching and Learning for a Sustainable North. This book, a project of the UArctic Thematic Network on Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity, explores the provision of education in the Arctic, focusing on challenges and innovations in meeting the needs of diverse learners in remote and rapidly changing contexts. Hirshberg also was lead author for the chapter titled “Adaptation Isn’t Just for the Tundra: Rethinking Teaching and Schooling in Alaska’s Arctic.”

Dr. Diane Hirshberg traveled to Joensuu, Finland to meet with collaborators on a new project called Enhancing Equity and Inclusion in Education in Circumpolar North (EICN).
Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) Assistant Professor of Economics, Dr. Kevin Berry, recently published a report for Bike Anchorage and the Municipality of Anchorage estimating and evaluating the impact of organized promotional events on the number of individuals cycling to work in Anchorage, Alaska, specifically “Bike to Work Day” (BTWD).
