Steve Colt was an economist at ISER from 1984 to June 2016, when he left UAA and joined the faculty at Alaska Pacific University. From 2007 to 2009 he was ISER’s director as well. He also led the effort to create an environmental studies program at UAA, and chaired that program from 1998 to 2006.
At ISER he primarily studied energy demand and efficiency and the economics of ecosystem services, often in cooperation with engineers, natural scientists, and others from various disciplines who shared his interest in analyzing the practical problems facing Alaska. In the 1990s he also did pioneering research on the economics of Alaska Native corporations.
He taught environmental economics and policy and natural resource economics, and was awarded the UAA Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in 1992, for his innovations in program delivery.
