Oliver Smith has been a research professional at CBHRS since August 2016. He is currently working on his M.A. in Applied Anthropology at the University of Alaska Anchorage and has received a graduate certificate in Geographic Information Science (GIS) from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 2014. His research interests include medical anthropology, substance abuse prevention, LGBTQ health issues focusing on transgender health, increasing access to LGBTQ affirming healthcare, GIS, and qualitative research methods. Oliver assists with program activities related to the Alaska FASD Practice and Implementation Center and the Alaska SPF Partnerships for Success Evaluation, including prevention efforts to create health system change to prevent FASDs and alcohol-exposed pregnancies and prevent prescription opioid and heroin misuse. His graduate thesis focuses on Alaskan transgender individuals’ experiences of discrimination and the interplay with their health and access to appropriate healthcare. Oliver also works with Identity, INC., Alaska’s LGTBQ Center, facilitating two transgender support groups and planning Alaska’s first statewide LGBTQ health needs assessment.
