As part of the Alaska Infrastructure Development Symposium, organized by the Alaska Municipal League (AML), ISER had the opportunity to lead a critical discussion on data management. At a time when an unprecedented amount of federal funding is available through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), challenges surrounding data requirements remain a significant barrier for many applicants.
ISER Economist Dr. Mike Jones and Research Professional Vanessa Collier led a work session focused on simplifying the complex realm of available data sources and key assessment tools, such as the White House’s Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool. Our aim was to help stakeholders pinpoint the right data for their specific community needs. It's worth noting that some attendees reported spending substantial amounts—some as much as $50,000—on outside consultants over the last few years to locate and decipher data that is publicly available but difficult to access. Among the data types considered most valuable were demographic and workforce data, followed by mapping capabilities.
ISER is proud to have participated in this crucial dialogue and is committed to continuing our work to make data more accessible, thereby fostering economic growth in Alaska.
