Vic Fischer, 2008

ISER is saddened to announce the passing of our first director and Director Emeritus, Vic Fischer. We are beyond grateful for his years of service to the state of Alaska, UA, and ISER. A memorial service is being planned for November; more information will be available in a few weeks. He was ISER’s first director, he studied and had taken part in Alaska government and politics for over 50 years. He was a territorial legislator, a delegate to Alaska’s constitutional convention, and later a state senator. In 2006 he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from UAA. In 2012 he published his autobiography, To Russia With Love.  Vic leaves behind his wife, Jane Angvik, with whom he had a daughter, and three children with his first wife.
