In the spring of 2017, ISER researchers Dayna DeFeo, Trang Tran, and Diane Hirshberg released a report quantifying the cost of teacher turnover in Alaska. Every time a teacher leaves, administrative, hiring, and training procedures cost the district approximately $20,400. Extrapolating to the number of teachers hired annually, that’s about $20 million per year. The report has gotten a lot of attention, and the study has been featured in news media outlets including Education Week, KTOO, and KTUU.
